HRCSL Calls for Increased Women’s Empowerment
Chairperson of HRCSL, Madam Patricia Narsu Ndanema
The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has called on stakeholders, particularly the government, civil society and the private sector to increase investments in initiatives that empower women economically, especially access to financing, skills development, and market opportunities
In its International Women’s Day Message, the Commission said the theme for this year’s celebration on 8th March which is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, resonates deeply with the national commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 which speaks to Gender Equality.
While celebrating the remarkable progress women in Sierra Leone have made in education and political participation, the National Human Rights Institution noted that challenges still remained.
“We acknowledge the challenges that remain. Women’s economic empowerment, full gender parity, and equal opportunities continue to require focused attention,” the message from HRCSL reads.
They urged the government, civil society organizations and the media to address discriminatory practices that hinder women’s full participation in public life and the workforce, strengthen enforcement mechanisms for existing laws that protect women’s rights and celebrate the achievements of women in all sectors to inspire future generations.
The Commission registered its commitment to promoting and protecting the human rights of all women in Sierra Leone, advocating for the implementation of laws that safeguard women’s rights and working with stakeholders to address gender-based discrimination.
